Education is critical, and the Performance Learning Assessment tool was created to help improve educational, behavioural and emotional skills, improving test results and exam scores and opening up individuals to prospects that they’d never believed possible before.

The Assessment provides the space for young adults in custody to explore their personal barriers to learning and then engage in activities to overcome these barriers, a positive and potentially life-changing experience.

Sarah Holliday, Learning and Skills Groups Lead, HMP YOI Hindley says:

“The PL Assessment and report has provided a real and valuable insight into the perceived personal barriers our young adults face when seeking to access learning opportunities whilst in custody.

The data provided a real insight as to what young adults in custody perceive to be the barriers to their successfully completing an accredited learning programme. Any pre conceived notion that young adults in custody are not motivated to learn was completely disproved, they want to learn, but their fear of academic failure is the barrier.

The data pin pointed the areas of individual need and / or anxiety that could then be supported by targeted one to one intervention.

As a result a number of young adults who, prior to the assessment might not have considered engaging in learning, accessed programmed to support their development and thus increased their prospects of employment on release.

The focus of the assessment is not on ‘ability’ and ‘levels’ but on the needs of the individual, the skills, knowledge and behaviours they want to focus on to prepare them to access learning. This allows for the development, in consultation with the young person, of a truly ‘individualised’ learning plan which accurately targets needs with the correct interventions.”

HOW The Performance Learning Assessment HELPED HMPS identify barriers to learning

HMPS used the Performance Learning Assessment at the YOI Hindley. Young adults were invited to complete the assessment and the results were presented by Performance Learning to the key stakeholders at the YOI Hindley who were involved in the education of the young adults who participated in the assessment.

The Performance Learning Assessment measures the previously immeasurable. Providing core technologies that complement existing work within the prison around civic behaviours and managing core skills.

The Assessment provides data that can be used to measure learning behaviours and readiness to learn, and help individuals thrive in custody and within the workplace. With a core focus on learning behaviours, the Performance Learning data helps key stakeholders to create the perfect intervention plan aimed at reducing reoffending rates and getting young people back into society.

Following the presentation of the results by Performance Learning, the YOI Hindley used the results data to help them to develop and “implement a regime model to meet the specific needs of the young adults in their care”.
