This has been a year like no other. 2020 will forever go down in history as the year of Covid-19, where the world was brought to a standstill by a global pandemic.

We were forced to adapt to ‘the new normal’ of masks, curfews, and social distancing.

While the global workforce was learning how to work remotely, learners of all ages had their academic year turned on its head. Not only did they have to deal with the repercussions of the Coronavirus pandemic in their daily home lives, but they also had to adapt the way they studied, did assignments, and even how they took examinations.

A trying year indeed for learners, parents and educators.

Here at Performance Learning our main goal is to always put learners first and that is why we felt now more than ever, it was crucial to focus on mental health and wellbeing – to keep learners, parents and educators motivated and inspired during these unprecedented times.

The Art (and Science) of Re-Energising.

“Emotion flows where energy goes”.

It is quite common for your energy levels to have a direct impact on your emotions. If you are experiencing low/negative energy levels you will usually be experiencing negative emotions. Similarly, if you have high/positive energy levels you will feel significantly more positive.

But in a year where it has been extremely difficult to stay positive and motivated, how does one achieve those positive energy levels?

Here are some new habits to start now during the festive season:

  • An extra 15-30 mins in bed every morning, especially now over the festive season to catch up on sleep.
  • Add in an extra 0.5 litres of water to your current consumption – sufficient hydration is important to keep you energised.
  • Build-in some form of exercise 3-times a week (I know it is hard, but your body gives you what you give it).

These simple, yet effective steps will help boost your energy levels and have a direct impact on your state of mind and emotions.

The Art of Diffusing Anxiety.

It happens to all of us – anxiety creeps in, you feel stuck, sometimes even paralysed. This is normal even in pre-pandemic circumstances, and it is completely okay to feel this way, as long as you know what steps to take to diffuse anxiety as soon as it starts to creep in:

    • Step 1: Breath. No, really, literally take a few deep breaths. Your breathing is altered by anxiety and consciously focusing on breathing, helps to manage those overwhelming feelings.
    • Step 2: Grab a pen and write down what triggered the anxiety. This will help detach you from the feeling.
    • Step 3: Now, note down how you want to feel. This focusses your mind on a solution or better emotion.
    • Step 4: Next, out loud, name 3 things that you can do, to make you feel more of what you want.
    • Step 5: Lastly, write down one of these things you’ve said out loud, that you think would be the easiest to do, and is within your control.

These are quick, short-term solutions to help you deal with anxieties that creep in and help you get back to learning. If your anxieties continue to grow, please talk to someone who can help support you, maybe a parent or teacher.

The Art of Controlling the Pace of Your Progress.

Whether you’re a learner, educational leader or a parent, knowing that you’re progressing in life is a great motivator. But life can sometimes become repetitive, overwhelming or – in a year of restrictions and frequent lockdowns – even boring.

To hold yourself accountable, frequently ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I planned something fun for myself this weekend?
  • How much work do I need to put in to achieve my outcomes this week?
  • What would a successful week look like?
  • What do I need to let go of this week?
  • What skill am I lacking that is holding me back?

  • Am I overthinking something that does not matter?
  • Is time managing me now, or am I managing time?
  • Am I tired and in need of a break?
  • Am I getting enough sleep?

It’s important to constantly take stock of your goals and how you plan on reaching them.

The Art of Reflection.

It is the time of year when we reflect on everything we have done, learnt and perhaps also what we could have done better. Especially in a year where you couldn’t be prepared for anything.

Ask yourself the following:

  • What did you do well this year?
  • What would you want to do better next year?
  • What advice would you give your best friend/partner/neighbour/colleague from everything you have learned this year?
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider show_divider=”off” _builder_version=”4.4.4″][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.4.2″ background_color=”#f5f5f5″ da_disable_devices=”off|off|off” da_is_popup=”off” da_exit_intent=”off” da_has_close=”on” da_alt_close=”off” da_dark_close=”off” da_not_modal=”on” da_is_singular=”off” da_with_loader=”off” da_has_shadow=”on”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.4.4″ min_height=”439.2px”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.4.2″ animation_style=”slide” animation_direction=”left” animation_intensity_slide=”9%”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ custom_margin=”0px||10px||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|false”]

Looking towards a new year

Whether you’re a parent, student or teacher, we hope that in a year that seemed uncertain at times (most of the time), you have enjoyed your journey with Performance Learning this year. That we have added value to your lives and provided some hope and clarity when sometimes it seemed like there was none.

But most of all, we hope that 2021 will be a better year for us all!
