Confusion is the last human emotion in the sequence of learning before you arrive at understanding. Understanding cannot occur unless confusion is present in the mind.

Confusion from a scientific perspective occurs when the brain is overloaded and unable to process, but most importantly, organise information – think of it like a filing cabinet that is overflowing.

By categorising performance into three categories:

  • What you know
  • What you ‘kind of know’
  • What you don’t know

You are able to help your learners clearly distinguish the exact subject modules they need to improve on to boost their                              performance and confidence.

This is where the athletic state of mind comes into play

Athletes also have many areas they have to continuously focus on and improve. The good athletes will get into a daily routine to focus every day on their major strengths, major weaknesses and the small bits in the middle. By routinely doing this, everything else falls into place as they develop their – Athletic State of Mind. This is exactly what you need to do in your classroom, helping your learners focus on where their strengths and weaknesses are, through self-honesty, reflection and action.

💡 Pro-Teacher Tip:

Frame this exercise as helping them get into an ‘Athletic State of Mind’. Have them pick their favourite sportsperson and discuss what they imagine their daily routines look like, focussing on both their major strengths and weaknesses in order to perform at the top of their game.
